America by Claude McKay

Although she feeds me bread of bitterness,
And sinks into my throat her tiger's tooth,
Stealing my breath of life, I will confess
I love this cultured hell that tests my youth.
Her vigor flows like tides into my blood,
Giving me strength erect against her hate,
Her bigness sweeps my being like a flood.
Yet, as a rebel fronts a king in state,
I stand within her walls with not a shred
Of terror, malice, not a word of jeer.
Darkly I gaze into the days ahead,
And see her might and granite wonders there,
Beneath the touch of Time's unerring hand,
Like priceless treasures sinking in the sand.

I like this poem because of how the writer is comparing how he feels about America. He says some harsh, strong things about America but then switches to saying how he likes America at the same time. It gives me different views on how a person sees our country.

Although she feeds me bread of bitterness- I like this line because it's an interesting phrase and it also shows that the writer thinks of our country in a good way and then in sorta a very harsh way.

Her vigor flows like tides into my blood- I really liked this line because after the writer's been saying such bad things, this like comes up next. He is now saying something good about our country "America".

And sinks into my throat her tiger's tooth- This line I though was very harsh and in a way gross. He's comparing America to a tiger that sinking their teeth into someone's throat, which I thought was weird.

Antigone- Who's right?

Based on what everyone is trying to do, I think that everyone is right in their own ways. Though, I mostly think Antigone is right. Antigone wants to bury her other brother, which i think she should be able to do since her other brother got buried. Having 2 older brothers myself it seems like the right thing to do for Antigone to bury her brother. She's a very strong and hard-headed person. She shows how smart she is when she has her confrontation with Creon. She knows what she's talking about and doesn't flinch back to any of his arguments that he presents her.

"When bad things happen to good people."

An example of something bad happening to good a person is when someone is driving carefully, minding their own business and then that person gets hit by a careless driver. The person who got hit could be killed or paralyzed or have some other serious injuries. The careless driver could have possibly ruined someone's life by being a reckless driver. Also, the bad driver could have not been paying attention to the road and didn't mean to crash into someone. Then that person could have serious consequences like going to jail for a long time even though they didn't mean to do it.There are many other things in which bad things happen to good people like a death of a family member or losing your job. I don’t really understand how or why bad things happen to good people because I do see it happen a lot. I personally have had many bad things happen in my life but everything eventually gets better.

Lady Macbeth: THEN AND NOW

What, quite unmanned in folly? Fie for shame!

Fie, my lord, fie, a soldier and afeard?

In this passage Lady Macbeth is talking to Macbeth about how he’s foolish because he keeps thinking he is seeing a ghosts and Lady Macbeth is saying that its nonsense. Both passages have similar words like “fie”, which means nonsense.

BLOOOOOOOOOD

Macbeth and Lady Macbeth
I chose the words killing, murder, and death.
Macbeth and Lady Macbeth both want Duncan dead but Macbeth is skeptical about killing him. But Lady Macbeth says to be a man and just murder Duncan. Macbeth does end up killing Duncan which results in his death

Blog Post #7

Option 1:  Describe a situation in which it would be better to try and get what you want indirectly, rather than asking for what you want.  Then describe the indirect approach that might be effective.

Say your friend borrowed your jacket from a long time ago and she/he said they would give it back but they keep forgetting. You don't want to be mean and just straight up ask them for it cause it might make them feel awkward. Instead you could kindly ask them if they still had your jacket instead of saying something like "give me back my jacket."

MACBETH:]

Macbeth
This is the picture of what i would imagine Macbeth to look like. He is wearing nice clothing and has on a crown, which makes me think he is "king-like". I think of Macbeth as a leader and very strong looking, which this picture shows.

3 Witches     This is the picture i chose to use the represent the 3 witches. When I think of them I think of creepy looking women, and this picture portrays that. I feel like the witches are very weird and different, like in this picture it looks like they are saying some kind of spell.

AMBITION, YEAH!

To me ambition means that you would do anything to get what you want. It means that you're very determined and won't stop trying to achieve something until you're satisfied. It most circumstances and i think ambition is positive, but for some cases there could be a dark side to it. Some people are sometimes overly ambitious and come off as trying to hard and could potentially ruin chances for themselves in the future. I feel that people should be ambitions is everything they do or you won't succeed as well as you could if you really were determined to do or get something. I do believe that I am a very ambitious person, when i want to achieve in something I will always try my hardest and put my all into what I am doing.

"The 32 Second Macbeth"

The witches say that fair is the same as foul. Next, the king sees a bloody man and the witch hears a drum and Macbeth comes. Macbeth says "So foul and fair a day I have not seen". Then one of the witches says "All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter!" Macbeth says if it happens, he will be king. Lady Macbeth says "Unsex me here." and Macbeth answers "If it were done when ‘tis done." Lady Macbeth says don't worry about your courage and kill Duncan. Macbeth then kills Duncan with a dagger. Lady Macbeth says "A little water clears us of this deed." Macbeth says "Blood will have blood." The witches then do something weird, like a spell and theres blood everywhere. Lady Macbeth is trying to get a blood stain out and Macbeth blow out a candle, then Macduff tells him to turn around. Macbeth and Macduff fight and Macbeth dies and then Macduff is crowned king.
I noticed that a lot of people get killed or die and that many different people get crowned king.
Two questions I have were what does "Fair is foul and foul is fair" mean. Also what does "Unsex me here" mean.

The Alchemist!

“Treasure is uncovered by the force of the flowing water, and it is buried by the same currents” page 25

“And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” page 23

LITERATURE RULES

Why should we care about Literature? Literature is used in our everyday lives. Whether you're writing a paper or reading a book. I strongly enjoy reading and learning more about literature and the different types that there are. I feel that Literature from the past is what had made the foundation of what Literature is now. I am very interesting in learning about Literature from different cultures. I think communicating with different people from other cultures can really change your perspective on certain things, including literature. Studying literature can expand everyones mind and people could also have a better perspective on life.

I'm Niki, and I'm cool

This year I expect and hope to improve my writing skills. I would also like to expand my vocabulary and grammar. Also, I would like to become a better essay writer. I expect this class to be very helpful and informative. I hope to work on areas where I need help to develop a stronger foundation for the future. I really hope to improve my skills in everything that we will learn in English class. To make our English class work, our class needs to be respectful and hardworking to the teacher and our fellow classmates and I think our class will have a great year!

This summer I went to my grandma’s house, which is in Cocoa Beach. My favorite moment that happened when I was there was when I got to feed the manatees! I was on the Banana River and a few manatees swam up to the dock. My mom and I fed them grass and gave them water with the hose. I also got to pet the manatees, which was an interesting experience!

My favorite artist of the moment is Justin Bieber. I deeply admire Justin Bieber because his music is inspiring and his songs have a message. I first started liking Justin Bieber in 2009 when he came out with his first song “One Time.” I have been one of his biggest fans since he first became famous. He also has an amazing voice. My favorite song by Justin Bieber would have to be “Never Say Never.” Last year, I actually went to one of Justin Bieber’s concerts with 3 of my best friends! It was extremely fun and I hope I can go to another Justin Bieber concert in the future!
